A New Year, A New Style

As this year draws to an end and a new one approaches, there is just something in the air that promises new things.  For some people it may be a new start in a new place or a new career and for others it could mean that it is time to change their home’s look.  If you happen to be one of these people thinking it’s time for your home to acquire a new style, you are in luck because there are dozens of interior design styles out there.  To make it a little easier for you to find the style that will best suit you, here are some tips:

1 – A Foreign Influence

The first thing you should do is think about whether you like designs that reflect your home or country environment or whether you are drawn to designs from other countries.  Do you love the beautiful carved chests and dressers found in Asian design?  Are you taken back by the charm of French provincial pieces?  Do you dream of being in a sun-bathed region of Tuscany surrounded with good warm earth?  Do the exquisite carvings of elephants, the glitter of gold, or the fluttering of bright cloths take you to the temples of India?  Perhaps African masks and statuary keep you entranced with the secrets they hold?  These interests should be taken into consideration when you are choosing the ornamental pieces that you are going to be surrounding yourself with.

2 – What is your personal style?

This might not seem like an important question when it comes to your home, but actually, it is.  Your personal style should determine the type of style you choose for your home.  For example, you should ask yourself if you are the type of person who likes basic, simple things or do you like elaborate, detailed items.  Are you the kind of person who is happiest at home reading a good book or do you like to be in an exotic place?  Are your clothes simple and classic or do you tend to follow the latest trends, changing as the trends change?  All of these questions are important to determine the type of environment you will enjoy being in the most.

3 – Color

A design scheme cannot be put together without color and you should pay close attention to the colors that attract you.  While you may have had a favorite color or colors for a long time, sometimes, you may find that you are incorporating different colors into your personal style.  As you explore your world, you become aware of the wide range of colors that are out there.  Look at your closet and see what colors pop out at you or go into a paint store and browse through the paint samples to see which shades appeal to you.

4 – Research

Your home is like any other project you undertake and by now, you understand how important it is to do your research.  You should browse through design magazines, visit websites and blogs, and even talk to a trained designer to see what trends are the most popular.  I like to watch shows on interior design to gather ideas and see what designers are coming up with.  If you follow the above steps, you will be able to put together a mental sketch of what you want and then tailor your research to center on that sketch.

Are there other things that you have found to be helpful when looking for a new design?
